How to Plant Your Steward of the Earth Seedling

1) Dig a hole wide and deep enough to cover the root system.
2) Handle seedlings by the base of the stem, trying not to mark the bark of the tree.
3) Place the roots straight down the hole as they naturally hang. Do not bunch, spiral, fold-over or bend roots. Plant seedlings as deep as the roots are on the tree. Only plant as deep as the top roots.
4) Cover with soil. Do not bury live branches or foliage, or leave any roots exposed to the air. Tamp soil firmly with your heel to fill in the hole and to get air pockets out.

- You can create a mulched area around the tree that is a 3 inches wider than the branches and 2-3" deep. Do not build the mulch up around the base of the tree - create a small bowl around the trunk of the tree.

Useful Equations

To figure out how many rolls of sod you need:

Measure your area in feet and times it by .116 = sod rolls

L (in feet) x W (in feet) x .116 = number of rolls of sod

ex. 10feet x 20feet x .116 = 23.2 rolls of sod (you would get 24 rolls of sod)

To figure out how many cubic yards of soil/aggregate you need:

Picture

Measure your area in feet x how deep in inches divide by 12 divide by 27 = cubic yards of soil/aggregates

L (in feet) x W (in feet) x D (in inches) /12 /27 = number of cubic yds.

ex. 10feet x 20feet x 2inches /12 /27 = 1.2 cubic yds. (you could get either 1 or 2 yards)

  • remember that this is not a compressed cubic yard. A cubic yard is 3x3x3 or 27 cubic feet.
