Plant & Nurture for a Greener Tomorrow!
“What is common to many is taken least care of, for all men have greater regard for what is their own than for what they possess in common with others.”
~ Aristotle Steward of the Earth is a Not-for-Profit Organization and was founded by Mike Johnson of Georgina Garden Centre. It is designed to challenge everyone to be a True Steward of the Earth. We can do this by planting and maintaining a healthy landscape starting on our own properties. All types of planting, whether it be annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, grass – all help our environment. Our challenge to everyone is to plant and nurture at least one tree throughout their life time. If we all plant at least one tree, our streets, communities, and world, will be a cleaner and a safer place to live. The program is designed to work on an individual basis, as more care is given to individual personal items, than what we all share in common. Vision: Steward of the Earth aims to get one tree into the hands of every young person across Canada. By planting and nurturing trees, school children across the country will learn the benefits of trees and become environmental leaders in their own communities. Mission: Steward of the Earth provides environmental leadership by teaching young people about the positive difference they can make to the environment by planting and nurturing one tree at a time. Uniting schools and community organizations with the support of local businesses, governments and individuals will provide generations of young students with an environmental appreciation for a greener tomorrow. Steward of the Earth School Program - 2009 Georgina Garden Centre will be sponsoring Prince Charles Public School in Newmarket this year. Steward of the Earth School Program - April-May 2007 St. Thomas Aquinas CES, in Keswick, participated in our 1st Steward of the Earth School Program and was a huge success. All of the students received a pamphlet on the Benefits of Trees, a Steward of the Earth magnet, a Steward of the Earth pin, an information letter outlining the Steward of the Earth program, planting instructions and the competition. The students had to bring the seedling home, plant it and take a picture of it and send it into the garden centre. They were then given a certificate congratulating them on becoming a True Steward of the Earth. Whichever class at the end of the 2 weeks had the most certificates, won a pizza lunch and a tree planted at the school in their honour. Congratulations to Ms. Wilma Bunnik's Sr. Kindergarten class for bringing back the highest number of Steward of the Earth certificates. Way to go!! |
